BOIDS

"BOIDS" is a motion graphics exploration of fragmentation, emergence, and collective motion. Beginning with a unified visual composition—a silhouette-based image layered with mythic undertones—the piece slowly disassembles into a fluid swarm of floating forms. Set against a background of pixelated, dithered waves in deep greens, blues, black, and soft purples, the piece transforms from stillness into ambient movement. The image becomes a murmuration, evoking the tension between individual identity and the instinctive pull of a larger, invisible system. It’s less about narrative, more about the motion of thought, instinct, and release.
Built first in Procreate as a layered, high-contrast illustration, the image was composed with a focus on translucency, profile repetition, and visual rhythm. In After Effects, specific segments; edges, lines, shapes; were extracted and reanimated as autonomous shapes. These elements were programmed to drift, hover, and regroup, echoing natural flocking behavior but retaining their emotional weight. The dithered wave background was animated subtly to create a shifting undercurrent, providing texture and atmosphere while suggesting a fluid, ambient system in motion. Color grading emphasized softness and cohesion, allowing the fragmented shapes to move without dissonance.
