“FACES” Motion Study — After Effects Exploration
This motion graphic was inspired by Mac Miller’s Faces, an album known for its raw introspection and shifting emotional tones. Translating that energy into motion, I designed a sequence of white outlined letters that jump and pulse to evoke rhythm and liveliness. The letters spell out “FACES,” capturing both the visual and thematic essence of the project — identity, transformation, and motion as expression.
Using After Effects, I implemented an echo effect to generate a trailing motion that transitions through reddish, bluish, and blackish hues. This creates a sense of depth and momentum, mirroring the layered and evolving nature of the album’s sound. The all-yellow background acts as a stark, emotional counterpoint — vibrant yet slightly nostalgic, grounding the movement in a unified tone.
This piece is meant to visually resonate with any track from Faces, maintaining the same vibe and emotional texture throughout. It’s not just a direct response to music but a study in visual rhythm — how motion, color, and timing can reflect the tone of sound. The result is a relaxed yet charged composition that bridges music and design into a cohesive visual experience.
